How to play Help on Their Terms
A neighbour is carrying several bags but has not asked for help. Which offer leaves the choice with them? Read the scenario and consider three replies. Choose a considerate response without guessing somebody’s private feelings.
Your starting point
A neighbour is carrying several bags but has not asked for help. Which offer leaves the choice with them?
The rules
Read the scenario and all the possible replies. Choose the response that respects the person’s stated needs and choices. Review the feedback and reflect on the wording.
A helpful approach
Use only the information in the scenario. Look for a response that asks, listens or explains clearly without assuming what another person secretly thinks. Think about the recipient’s actual preference, and keep any offer specific enough that you can comfortably follow through.
After the game
What made one response leave more room for the other person’s own choice? What small offer could be useful to someone while still leaving them completely free to decline it?
There is no need to turn a small moment into a perfect performance. Play again if you want to explore it, or leave it here and take the thought into your day.
The feeling behind it
Offer useful help, notice a need and ask before stepping in. The recipient gets to choose what care looks like for them.
Community meals and voluntary service inspire practical care. These religious practices are not simply a lifestyle word for kindness.
Read our kindness story, inspired by Langar and seva in Sikh tradition, including Amritsar, India. The Incredible India: Sri Harmandir Sahib, Golden Temple provides the source context.
